Recipe Box

Label your dividers by category, such as meat, poultry, vegetables, desserts, luncheon ideas, entertaining guests, etc. If the recipe takes up more than one card, just staple them together. Use a highlighter to mark the top edge of the card if it's a family favorite. If your box gets too full, get a second box and split your categories between the two boxes.

Family Box

For this box you'll need to label one divider for each family member, one for "family," one for "household" and one for "emergency." As an example, my family would need 10 dividers because we have five children.

For each family member, create a health card and list doctor visits, immunizations, illnesses, and the names of doctors and their phone numbers. For children, create a "first" card, listing first tooth, first haircut, first steps, etc.

For the "family" section, use cards to keep a journal of family events and milestones; begin with the year you were married. Each year list things such as a new job, new home, weddings, births, schools attended, vacations taken, clubs joined, awards won, and so on.

For the "household" section, keep lists of items currently in storage like clothing and holiday decorations. Keep a list of the location of insurance papers, safety deposit boxes and other important papers such as birth, death and wedding certificates, as well as tax returns. Keep a list of stock accounts, bank accounts, and charge card accounts; include Internet accounts, too. This list will come in handy in case of emergency. Be sure to list people to contact in the event of an emergency too, like family members, friends, and co-workers.

This may be the most important box in your home, so keep it updated on a monthly basis, more often if necessary, and keep it in a safe place.
